The yoga is designed for the well being of mind (psyche and intelligence), body and the soul and the Pranayama is not the exception. Pranayama is the only procedure among all type of Yogas, which can provide you the total wellness. Here I am with the spiritual characteristics of the Pranayama.
"TASMIN SATISHWAS PRASHWASOGATI VICHHEDAH PRANAYAMH" (MAHARISHI PATANJALI)
To systematize our breathing, as per the explanation is established in yoga texts, is Pranayam. According to Mahrishi Patanjali, sitting steadily in any asana (but that should be sitting position like Siddhasan, Padmasan or any convenient sitting posture) and controlling the breathing in and breathing out course of action is the Pranayama or Pranayam. Though Prana has been detailed in an article on this site therefore briefing of the Prana will be time spoiling matter.

Means- who are inclined to the process of breath restraint to remain in trance, practice by offering the movement of outgoing breath into incoming, and the incoming breath in to the out going, and thus at last remain in trance, stopping all breathing. Others, curtailing the eating process, offer the out going breathe in to it self as a sacrifice. This system of yoga for controlling the breath process is called Pranayama, and beginning it is practiced in hath-yoga system through different sitting postures. All these processes are recommended for controlling of senses and for advancement in the spiritual realization. This practice involves controlling the airs within the body so as to reverse the directions of their passage. The Apana-air goes downward, and Prana air goes upward. The Pranayam-yogi practices breathing the opposite way until the currents are neutralized in to POORAKA, equilibrium. Offering the exhale breath into the inhale breath is called RECHAKA. When both air currents are completely stopped, one is said to be in KUMBHAKA. By practice of KUMBHAKA one can increase the duration of the life for the perfection in spiritual realization. The intelligent yogi is interested in attaining perfection in one life, without waiting for the next. For by practicing KUMBHAKA, the yogis increase the duration of life by many, many years. Basically, to inhale the air is POORAKA, to exhale the air is RECHAKA and to hold the breath is KUMBHAKA. There are many kinds of Pranayama. The duration and frequency of all three actions vary kind to kind of Pranayama.
CAN WE ACHIEVE THE SPIRITUALITY WITH PRANAYAMA: Shutting out all peripheral sense objects, keeping the eyes and vision concentrated between two eyebrows, suspending the inward and outward breaths within the nostrils, and thus controlling the mind, senses and intelligence, the transcendentalist aiming at liberation becomes free from desire, fear and anger. One who is always in this state is certainly liberated. And this is the MOKSHA. The moksha is liberation from material existence as well as the salvation from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth and perennial stay near the Parambrham (the almighty god). The moksha must be the ultimate objective of every human being; this is the main cause behind the excogitation of yoga.
