Stress is a term derived by Biology from engineering meaning an ability to withstand a definite amount of strain. It is a state manifested by a specific syndrome, which consists of all the non-specifically induced changes within a biological system. Stress is a natural response and is part of normal living. It cab be emotional or physical, such as having an accident or operation. This condition harms the body or damages or causes the death of a few or many cells. When the diet is adequate the body immediately tries to repair the damaged cells. If rebuilding of cells is not able to keep with their destruction the condition results in disease.
Stress manifests itself in the form of physical symptoms. The pupils of eye dilate, digestion slows down, muscles become tense, the heart starts pumping blood faster, hormones such as adrenaline are released into the system along with glucose from the liver and sweating starts in persons having stress. On removal of stress factors all the above changes become irreversible.
In today’s era, no one is free from stress. Some important causes of stress in students are: -
- Fierce competition.
- Excessive burden of syllabus.
- Utopian expectations.
- Undue expectations of parents from their wards.
- Gap between achievements and expectations.
- More workload in accordance with the available less span of time.
- Heavy burden of homework / project work.
- Irregular lifestyle, hectic phase of going to school / tuition.
- Problem of daily up down to school at distant places.
- Examination phobia.
- Apprehensions of twisted / unclear questions in examination.
- Apprehensions of poor performance in exam.
- Embarrassment of on poor result.
- Excessive strictness of teachers.
- Excessive strictness of parents.
- Indifferent attitude of parents / teachers
- Lack of time for the children by the working parents.
- Feeling of lack of security / moral support.
- Getting no proper outlet for exhibiting of one’s talent.
- Insomnia.
- Lack of will power.
- Lack of concentration.
- Apprehension about career.
- Lazy climatic conditions.
- Family disputes-quarreling parents.
- Financial problems.
To manage stress, students should take vegetarian diets, do exercise regularly, follow simple life style, develop optimistic attitude towards life. Soft drinks should be avoided as they cause nervousness, irritability and palpitation. Excessive intake of salt should be avoided. Alcohol depletes vit.B group considered essential for reducing stress, cigarettes also causes irritability and sleeplessness.
Use of herbs like Brahmi(Centella asiatica), Shankhpushpi(Convolvulus pluricaulis), Kooshmand(Benincasa hiapidia), Vacha(Acorus calamus), Jatamansi(Nordostachys jatamansi), Ashwagandha(Withania somnifera) gives appreciable results.
Adopting following thoughts in one’s life too helps in alleviating the stress.
- Success in any venture is not measured by the achievements but by the sincerity of the efforts you make.
- Happiness lies not in things but in thoughts.
- Develop an attitude towards your family, friends and fortune like an honest tenant and not like a proud owner.
- Be optimistic, count your blessing and not failures.
- When the fate hands you a lemon, it is as better to make its lemonade than to cry for an orange.
- Peace in life comes not from the absence of conflicts but from the ability to cope with them.
- Prayers go up, blessings come down.
- Work is worship. Remain busy in doing something constructive.
- When you can’t change the direction of winds, change the sails of your ship.
- Prefer to choose the occasion to express gratitude than to complain.
- It is not always the overwork but irregularity that causes the fatigue.
- Happiness, wealth and success are the byproducts of goal setting they cannot be goal themselves.
- Forgiveness is the noblest form of revenge.
- Don’t wait for your ship to come in………….. swim out to meet it. The throat cutting competitions, more jumping expectations of nearer are some foremost causes at the back the stress or resembling problems in students. This is very scorching concern amongst the children psychologists of all over the world.
