Gemstones and crystals have long been used to cure various diseases. Our old tests are replete with the references of using stones as ornaments not only for cosmetic purposes but for the purpose of health too.
Gemology was a subject of keen attraction even in ancient times. The purpose of wearing stone is the interaction of its subtle energy with the energy of body.
Different fingers of the hand are more suitable for different type of stone. As the thumb represents the soul, no ring is recommended for it. Generally the ring finger is more suitable for wearing red coral and diamond. Little finger is for gomed, emerald and pearl. Yellow sapphire should be used in index finger. Blue sapphire is the only gem to be worm on the middle finger. Gems should be authentic, unprocessed, clean and without any flow. It should not be processed or chemically treated.
In Ayurveda a gemstone can be taken internally in the form of a bhasma or alchemic ash, prepared by classical method. There are main nine planets viz, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. For them Ruby(Manikya), Pearl(Moti), Coral(Moonga), Emerdad(Panna), Yellow sapphire(Pukhraj), Diamond(Heerak), Blue Sapphire (Neelam), Gomed and Lehsunia are used respectively.
The Ruby is a precious stone. It is sweet and pungent in taste. It pacifies Vata and Kapha but elevates Pitta. It is a life giving stone and gives longevity to Vata and Kapha people. It improves digestion.
The pearl, known as moti among common people is sweet and cooling and the post digestive effects is sweet. Its Bhasma is used for pacifying pattic disorders. It is used in gastritis, gastric ulcer, peptic ulcer and sexual debility. It is useful in bringing mental peace and tranquility.
Red coral, known as pravala is sweet, cooling and post digestive effects is sweet. It pacifies pitta. It gives strength to liver and spleen. Its bhasma is useful in gastric disorders.
Emerlad or panna is sweet and cooling. It calms Vata and Pitta but may elevate kapha. It calms the nervous system and helps in improving speech. It is nutritive, digestive and brings prosperity and spiritual awakening.
Yellow sapphire or pukhraj is sweet and cooling. It calms Vata and Pitta but elevates kapha. This gemstone should be used in golden ring. Person having Vatic or Pattik disorders with unstable mind can find relief by using this stone. It should be worn on index finger.
Diamond is a naturally found in coal mine. It can be broken with diamond. Vajra is a variety of diamond. It is pungent and astringent. It should be used in gold. Its use helps in enhancing art, music, romance and sex.
Blue sapphire or nilam is a precious stone. It is pungent and hot. It pacifies Vata and Kapha but elevates Pitta. It prevents emaciation and protects from affliction of Saturn. It helps to build up muscles and the skeletal system and helps in arthritis.
Gomed used for Rahu, is sour to the taste and heating. It pacifies Vata and Kapha but stimulates Pitta. It acts on blood and flesh. It is useful in muscle fatigue. It is used in attention deficient disorder.
Lehsunia used for the ketu, is pungent, heating. It calms Vata, pacifies kapha but elevates pitta. It is useful in allergy, cold and congestion. It protects from evil spirit. It helps I kidney dysfunctions.
In nutshell, the judicious use of stone, externally or internally helps to pacify a lot of health disorders.
