Heart disease in ayurveda Ayurveda is, as we know that, one of the oldest medicine systems of the world. Ayurveda has the epigrammatic explanation of heart diseases.
In ayurveda the heart is called HRIDAYA and heart disease is known as HRIDAYA-ROG. Before making out the ayurvedic enlightenment on heart diseases, we must know the ayurvedic physiology first so that we can understand the ayurvedic way out properly.

The functioning of heart—
According to ayurveda the heart is key organ of RAS-VAHA-SROTAS (RAS circulatory system), mean the RAS (an important and first Dhatu) is being circulated within the body through the RAS-VAHINIS (the RAS-VAHINI are tube or vessel like structures also known as capillaries) and heart is the base of this system. Sushruta postulates that this RAS-VAHA-SROTAS also has concern with PRAN-VAHA- SROTAS (Respiratory system). The heart creates equilibrium between both systems for normal life. In previous article we have come to know about common heart diseases according to modern medical science, in this article we will be familiar with the ayurvedic opinion on heart diseases.
Aside from this preface, the ayurvedic elaboration on heart diseases depicts the historical evidence, it means the heart diseases are not the production of this era.
The heart is supposed to be uncompromising vital part in ayurveda as well as this is the dwelling place of CHETAN TATVA (the element that keeps every one alive and wide awake), the MANN or the psyche as well.

The causes of heart disease: --
Customary intake of heavy, hot (OOSHNA), spicy, bitter and pungent in taste food, extra physical exertion (SAAHAS), trauma, starvation or malnutrition, anxieties and depressive or aggressive behavior, and to hold that thirteen avoidable bodily pressure which are recommended in the text like hunger, tears, sneeze, yawn, winds from up side that is eructation and through the rectum, vomiting and other.

Classification of heart disease in Ayurveda: -

Ayurveda divides into five types of these.
1. VATA type –
Penetrating pain, tightness in the chest, syncope, palpitation and arrhythmia are the most universal symptoms of vata or vatic type of heart disease. Likeness founds with Angina and coronary thrombosis and IHD as well as R.H.D (Rheumatic heart disease)

2. PITTA type –

Unnecessary over thrust, burning sensations, restlessness in cardiac region and fever are some common symptoms. You can match the infective heart maladies with this. 3. KAPHA type –
Lethargic movements, heaviness in the cardiac area, breathlessness like asthma are the main symptoms, actually the hypertrophy or enlargement of heart can be matching word for this type of ayurvedic classification, therefore all those heart diseases which take place due to enlargement of any side of heart can count in this categorization.

4. TRIDOSHAJ or SANNIPATIK type (mixed type) –
It depends on the involvements of all three disturbed Doshas. If any two Doshas more aggravated and third is not so aggravated, then the symptoms and pathogenesis will be according to their temperaments.

5. KRIMIJ type –
Feeling like going to become unconscious or black out in front of eyes, vomiting or nausea, belching, anorexia, itch and sever pain in the chest are the general indicating sign. This is merely infective disorder, in ayurveda the KRIMI means the parasite.
